What are NAELA & AFELA?
I am a member of both NAELA (National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys) and AFELA (Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys) - which are nationwide and statewide networks of attorneys specializing in Federal and State regulations, statutes and public laws related to issues surrounding elder adults. These issues include:
- Social Security Benefits
- Supplemental Security Income
- Medicare and Medicaid
SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS
Determine whether you are eligible for benefits as: a retired worker, spouse, divorced spouse, widower, surviving divorced spouse, and possibly the parent or child of the worker.
SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME
If you meet the resource requirement and are aged, blind, or disabled you may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). After the institution of the Social Security system, various state administered and state and federally co-funded cash assistance programs evolved. These programs provide a cash payment if you meet the federally based income and resource/asset eligibility requirements of SSI.
MEDICARE AND MEDICAID
MEDICARE may provide you health care services and reduce your financial burden with the high costs of your medical care if you are elderly. If you are 65 and older, or disabled, or suffer from end stage renal disease you may qualify for Medicare.
MEDICAID may provide you assistance with medical cost if you are a low-income person or receiving public assistance for medical care,
